DEI Beyond the Data – Interview with Eric Johnson – Replay

DEI Beyond the Data – Interview with Eric Johnson – Replay

Understanding Intersectionality & Engaging Every Employee in DEI

Intersectionality is the interconnected nature of social categorizations such as race, class, and gender as they apply to a given individual or group, regarded as creating overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage. Each of the aspects of an individual’s identity depends on and shapes the others. The intersectionality of these identities directly impacts their experiences and how they engage with their family, friends, and colleagues.

On March 15, Diversio held a candid conversation with Eric Johnson to take a closer look at intersectionality, how it impacts the workplace, and what it means for employee engagement.

Topics that were addressed:

  • What is intersectionality & how does it manifest in the workplace?
  • How to identity individual privileges, oppressions, & where they overlap
  • How intersectionality helps us improve DEI initiatives
  • Why are belonging & human-to-human connection critical to DEI engagement?
  • Tools & methods to engage in DEI conversations & improve individual belonging
  • Questions from the audience

Featuring:

Eric Johnson, Director of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion at Medical Solutions

Eric Johnson is the Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging at Medical Solutions and an ICF Certified Inclusion Coach. He holds a bachelor’s degree from UCLA in English and a master’s degree in Communications Management from USC. In his role as DEIB Director, Eric highlights Insight and Inclusion because they inform all of the initiatives in their diversity equity, inclusion, and belonging program. This is a skill that was honed in years prior as a DEI Consultant where Eric helped clients navigate their DEI culture shift by helping them to see what they otherwise couldn’t as they begin the daunting task of addressing issues such as ageism, gender and gender identity, sexism, race and racism, bias, socio-economic status, LGBTQ+, diverse candidate recruiting and retention, disability, and political affiliation, religion, and more. Eric takes an artful yet finessed approach to educating while creating and holding safe space for powerful conversations to thrive. He uses deep compassion to illuminate a fundamental challenge when it comes to DEI; that organizations are dealing with humans, their value systems, and all of the emotions that typically includes.
