Women in Communications and Technology: Advancing Gender Equity

Women in Communications and Technology (WCT) is a Canadian non-governmental organization with over 30 years of success in advancing and supporting women in the digital economy. WCT partners with some of Canada’s most reputable employers to develop and deploy programs that promote gender equity in the workplace and facilitate connections among Canadian women at all career stages. Through a network of volunteer-led Chapters across Canada, WCT provides regional perspectives supported by a centralized National office. This structure enables Corporate Partners to collaborate with regional Chapters to offer in-person learning, development, and networking events.

Career acceleration programs

WCT’s flagship career acceleration programs are a cornerstone of its offerings. These programs, developed in partnership with leading facilitators, coaches, and thought leaders, are designed by women for women. Recognizing the unique challenges women face in the workplace, these programs help participants navigate their careers, providing mentorship, career insights, and support.

Learning & development online community

Launched in 2023, the WCT Learning & Development Online Community on the Mighty Networks platform extends WCT’s impact by providing a space for members, program participants, and alumni to learn from one another, offer support, engage in discussions, and build lasting relationships. This platform not only offers a safe space for women to connect but also reinforces key learning moments from WCT’s programs to ensure practical application and true behavior change.

Impact and achievements

Program reach and engagement

Currently, over 1,300 women from every province in Canada are active on the platform. Since its launch, WCT has hosted over 20 live learning and development events and created more than 10 discussion spaces on topics relevant to women at work, such as working parenthood, menopause’s impact on work, and early career support. Feedback has been phenomenal, and the mentorship program launched in February has already exceeded expectations, with mentor applications oversubscribed, allowing WCT to provide mentorship to more women than initially anticipated.

Enhanced employee engagement and retention

WCT’s initiatives have led to increased talent retention, higher inclusion and engagement scores among employees, and improved productivity. By providing continuous learning and development opportunities, WCT ensures that women have access to career development resources, addressing a common reason women leave workplaces. Engaging both employers and employees in these programs fosters accountability and reinforces the importance of career development.

Conclusion

Women in Communications and Technology (WCT) has made significant strides in advancing gender equity in the digital economy. Through comprehensive career acceleration programs and the innovative Learning & Development Online Community, WCT provides women with the tools, support, and opportunities needed to thrive in their careers. By fostering a culture of continuous learning and community support, WCT is not only enhancing individual career trajectories but also driving broader organizational and societal change. For organizations and individuals interested in gender equity in the workplace, WCT offers valuable partnerships and impactful programs that make a difference.
