Participants will consider how they can respond as the recipient or witness of a microaggression, as well as how to respond if they have been called out as an initiator.

Training outline & objectives

Understanding micro-behaviours

  • Define microinequities and microaggressions, exploring their subtle forms of discrimination and their impact on individuals and workplace culture.
  • Recognize the different types of micro-behaviours, including verbal, nonverbal, and environmental cues that perpetuate bias and exclusion in the workplace.

Managing micro-behaviours

  • Learn about the impact of microaggressions on individuals and teams, including their psychological and emotional toll, and their contribution to workplace tension and conflict.
  • Develop strategies to respond to microaggressions in difficult situations, considering different roles such as the recipient of disrespectful behavior, a manager or people leader, and the perpetrator.

Addressing micro-behaviours effectively

  • Explore response options as an observer or bystander, recognizing the importance of intervening and advocating for inclusion when witnessing microaggressions in the workplace.
  • Understand response options for individuals who have been called in or out for engaging in microaggressions, including strategies for acknowledging mistakes, apologizing, and committing to change.

Promoting micro-affirmations

  • Discuss the concept of micro-affirmations as positive, small acts of inclusion and affirmation that counteract microaggressions, fostering a more inclusive and supportive workplace environment.
  • Learn how to implement micro-affirmations in daily interactions and practices, promoting belonging, respect, and equity for all employees.
